The Fraser Centre Community Trust formed the vision to create a centre for learning, development, arts & entertainment providing a place to bring people together and form community spirit in the heart of Tranent, the Trust utilised the former Winton Cinema which opened in 1922 and closed in 1972. After extensive surveys, decision was made to rebuild rather than refurbish due to the condition of the building and challenges to achieve the required community impact within the existing floor layouts.

    The judges said

The New Fraser Centre has transformed the availability and quality of community leisure opportunities in Tranent. The new facility has been developed on the site of the previous facility, a former cinema that was inherently compromised and ultimately condemned as not fit for purpose. The new centre provides high quality flexible spaces, a cinema, café and small commercial office units within a simple new building. It delivers more than the sum of its parts, and transformational the benefit to the Tranent community.
